Student and Employee Records Hacked at Penn

Dozens of universities—including Penn—fell victim to an international cyberattack. The universities systems were hacked and student and employee records were posted online. Penn released a statement on Wednesday confirming the attack, but announcing that most of the really sensitive information wasn’t released.

“Fortunately, no sensitive information that could result in identify theft, such as Social Security numbers, PennKey passwords, bank account numbers, or credit card numbers are contained in the database that was compromised,” the e-mail said.

Harvard, Rutgers and others were among the American universities that were hacked. Hacker group Team GhostShell claimed responsibility for the attack and posted the information along with a message about problems with higher education system, particularly the rapidly accumulating student debt.
