Broad Street Run Security Rules: “No Bags, Backpacks, Coolers In The Navy Yard.”
Our colleagues at Be Well Philly have the security memo for Sunday's Broad Street Run, a race a little more fraught seeing as it comes just a few weeks after the Boston bombings.
Here's what to expect on Sunday:
1. All runners electing to use gear-check on race day must pack their gear in clear bags provided at the race expo. If it is a nice day, it is recommended that runners not bring any gear with them.
2. Prior to the race, runners and spectators should sign up to receive emergency text alerts by visiting www.readynotifypa.org. This is how officials will alert runners
6 ABC’s Cecily Tynan Will Finish the Broad Street Run Ahead of You
Fact of the afternoon: 6 ABC Meteorologist Cecily Tynan completed last year's Broad Street Run in just over an hour, finishing first in her age group (40-44). This year she's gunning for 1:01:00, a minute faster than last year's mark. Be Well Philly's Emily Leaman interviews her here, and I'll just excerpt her answer to the inevitable weather question. The rest you can read at the source.
I always feel, especially in a race this distance, you shouldn’t overdress. Even if it’s cool in the morning, you don’t want to wear long sleeves and tights. Your body will heat up and you’ll
Philly Runners To Honor Victims Of Boston Bombings
CBS Philly reports that local joggers are planning a massive group run on Thursday to show solidarity with participants at Monday's Boston Marathon. “We have seen a huge outpouring from the community in Philadelphia. Tons of people are asking ‘what can we do?’” Philadelphia Runner's website says. “After speaking to several groups in the area and other stores, it sounds like the best thing we can do is: Go for a run.” Runners will gather in various locations throughout the city, culminating in a mass arrival at the Liberty Bell. The run starts at 7 p.m.

You can decide to run next year instead (your entry will be guaranteed) or you can transfer it to someone more desperate than you are to run this year. More over at Be Well Philly.
Panic (Or Actually, Don’t)! Broad Street Run Lottery Opens Today
The Broad Street Run Lottery registration begins...9 hours and 30 minutes ago. And it will end...in 278 hours and 30 minutes. Only 40,000 slots, so act now! Actually, you don't really have to, since apparently Philadelphia's most competitive institutions have unilaterally abandoned the virtues of the age-old first-come, first-served tradition (see Alexander, Penn) and will be forcing you to throw your hat in the ring with the faceless, lethargic, masses. Check Be Well Philly for more Broad Street Run details. And, of course, register here.
Broad Street Run Deferral Program Now Open
If you deferred your spot in last year's Broad Street Run, you can guarantee your spot this time around for free. Practically. And bypass the biggest, baddest lottery this side of Penn Alexander.
The deferral program is open through February 11th. Note: You still have to pay the $40 registration fee this year, even if you deferred your entry last year. Once you enter your information in the registration form, the system checks your name against the database of deferrals. If it can’t find your name, you’ll receive an error message prompting you to email race officials at bsrhelp@aim.com.
