Philly Teams Are Paying More Than $50 Million for Bad Knees

The most remarkable thing about the new list of the 25 highest-paid athletes in Philadelphia that it's an orthopedist's dream. Phillies pitchers Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay lead the list at $21.5 million and $2o million apiece—deals that made sense when they were signed, even if 2012 was a bit of a bummer for them. But get the next three names on the list:

• Ryan Howard: $20 million.

• Andrew Bynum: $16.889 million.

• Chase Utley: $15.285 million.

So much money. So few healthy knees.

Now, Howard and Utley brought us a World Series championship back in 2008, so Philadelphians are inclined to be

Is Chase Utley Moving to Third Base?

Once upon a time Chase Utley was working on his fielding at the hot corner because the Phils had just traded Scott Rolen. Placido Polanco came (in the Rolen deal), went, and came back again. Now, as Polly battles nagging health issues and the Phils have J-Roll and Freddy Galvis (presumably, upon return) to fill the middle of the infield, the Phils are again discussing the possibility of moving Utley to third. Over here, though, we'll be happy with anyone playing the position whose name doesn't begin with a "D" and end with an "avid Bell."[Inquirer]

HughE Dillon: Jimmy Rollins Takes the Phils Bowling

At the 7th Annual BaseBOWL Tournament (benefiting the Rollins Family Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation), Jimmy Rollins, here with wife Johari Rollins, talked about the children who have been touched by the funds raised at BaseBOWL events. He talked about the smiles on kids' faces as they attend Camp JRA (Juveniles Reaching Achievement), which is a week-long camp for kids ages 8-18 with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. He enjoys the bond he shares with the kids, and every year he gets a gigantic group photo of the kids who benefited from the Jimmy Rollins Foundation. He said he's so proud of the work that went into it to give those kids a place to have fun and meet other kids like themselves.

President Obama's Stop in Philly. Last night, President Barack Obama flew into Philly for a number of fund-raising events just in time to spoil your afternoon commute. While he was in town, he told the Science Leadership Academy's graduating seniors they would cure cancer and Alzheimer's and name-dropped Benjamin Franklin in a speech before glad-handing and speaking with paying supporters at two other events. Chase Utley Hits Another Home Run

On Monday, Chase Utley returned to live baseball action as a DH in an extended spring training game. He earned three hits and homered to deep right-center. Today, Utley and Howard were in the same lineup—both as designated hitters—and Utley homered again. Yeah, go ahead and get him back to Philly, pronto. [Twitter]

Bad Knees Will Keep Chase Utley Out of the Hall of Fame

Lost amid 1) all the unfortunate hand-wringing over Chase Utley’s balky knees; 2) the ultimately pointless finger-pointing about who was wrong about when Utley would return to the field; and 3) the chin-stroking about why the the team didn’t retain as Utley insurance a guy with a career 621 OPS , who’s interchangable with Michael Martinez and whose ultimate value is as a trivia answer, is this:

What we may be witnessing with Chut-knee-gate 2.0 is more than just another protracted spring drama for the greatest second baseman to ever don the Phillies pinstripes. We are most likely watching Utley’s chance at baseball immortality—enshrinement in the Hall of Fame, an honor that, just one calendar year ago, he seemed on track for—definitively circling the drain.

The Lady Fan’s Guide to Freddy Galvis (a.k.a. the New Chase Utley)

Earlier today, Mike Bertha wrote about why Freddy Galvis is a suitable replacement for injured Phil Chase Utley, using phrases like "his fielding is solid," and "he won the 2011 Paul Owens Award." Yes, sounds good. But for the female fan who's hanging at Citizens Bank Park only to catch a glimpse of Chase Utley's butt (see the “Who Is the Backup Pitcher” Girl here), and, let's face it, the woman who loves both baseball and Chase Utley's butt, we present the lowdown on Freddy Galvis's cuteness factor.

Galvis was only four when he started playing baseball on the

It’s Time to Start Panicking About Chase Utley

The Phils second baseman has left Clearwater to be evaluated by a specialist. This comes after Chase allegedly "hit a plateau" in rehab. For those of you keeping score at home, this is not good news. With Howard out indefinitely, Utley unable to take the field, Polly taking it slow, and Domonic Brown sleeping funny, the injury bug is going around down in Florida. Oh, and opening day is in 17 days. Yay. [Crossing Broad]

What You Missed From Phillies Spring Training This Week

It was damn near 70 degrees yesterday, Kelly Drive is perpetually packed with people gearing up for the Broad Street Run and Rita's Water Ice is open. It’s officially spring in our books, which means—no offense Flyers and Sixers—we've already shifted focus to what's going on in Clearwater.

Some of us have semi-normal jobs that prevent us packing up our crap all willy-nilly and hopping a flight to Phillies spring training. Others, have careers that prevent them from watching the Phils in their offices. Luckily, that's not a problem we run into at The Philly Post. So, while we’re stuck up here with the lions of March, we’ve got your Spring Training Cliff's Notes from Week 1. You know, just in case you already feel like you’re behind the curve. Here’s what you need to know.
