Bob Casey Backs Same-Sex Marriage, May Become A Democrat
Huffington Post reports that conservative Democratic Sen. Bob Casey has shifted his position and now backs same-sex marriage. "After much deliberation and after reviewing the legal, public policy and civil-rights questions presented, I support marriage equality for same-sex couples and believe that DOMA should be repealed," Casey said in as tatement to Philadelphia Gay News. Following his recent change-of-position to favor new gun-control laws, observers say that Casey is growing increasingly distant from his Republican base—and may have to jump ship to the Democratic Party to preserve his electability.
(Checks notes.) Wait. Casey is already a Democrat? Who knew?
Amid Latest NFL Firestorm, Eagles ‘Backer Cool With a Gay Teammate
The NFL's homosexuality wars are heating up! Suiting up for the pro-camp: Chrisssss Kluwe and Bran-don Ayanbadejo. And for the anti-gay marriage team: The still uncomfortable Chrises: Clemons and Culliver! This just in--the Eagles have sent at least on representative to the game. Linebacker Connor Barwin chimed in:
As a heterosexual man, I can’t speak to what it must feel like to be gay in the NFL. I don’t know what somebody goes through. I imagine its very hard to go through. So I would support that teammate no matter what.
G Philly has more on Barwin, including a good male genitalia pun.
MTV ’90s Flashback: How the “Real World” Has Changed
Last weekend, to promote the 28th season of the The Real World, MTV aired three seasons of the genre-groundbreaking series marathon-style. Watching “Retro MTV” felt something like a time machine, back to a time when people wore too much plaid and reality television felt less like an act of Schadenfreude.
The Federal Government Is Best Left Out of Marriage
There’s no such thing as a perfect Christian. There’s certainly no such thing as a perfect politician. But I’m becoming increasingly frustrated at politicians who can’t seem to take a position on certain societal issues without compromising their faith to score popularity points. Similarly, I tire of Christians who can’t adhere to their faith without allowing it to become a public side-show.
Want To Support Marriage Equality On Facebook? We’ve Got 44 Versions Of The Red Equals Sign
Our colleagues at Bridal Bulletin blog write: "If you are alive and have a Facebook account—actually, scratch that. If you are alive, you will have undoubtedly seen various versions of the red equals sign that have been flooding the internet over the past day or so as the Supreme Court listens to oral arguments in the case concerning Proposition 8.
"The one to the right, here, is the original—the one that spawned a bajillion viral recreations—created by the Human Rights Campaign."
There are 43 more versions at this link. If you want to show your support for same-sex marriage on Facebook but haven’t found the red
Young Republicans Throw Childless Married Couples Under the Bus
Today, the Supreme Court began hearing arguments in back-to-back cases challenging California's Prop 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA. I support legalizing gay marriage, and believe that allowing same-sex couples to wed is the best way to save a valuable, but threatened, institution.
But as a dedicated heterosexual with a spouse of the opposite sex, I never in a million years imagined that the fight to deny marriage rights to gays and lesbians would find me and my wife in its crosshairs. Yet that's exactly what happened earlier this month, when a determined fringe of mostly young conservatives decided that the best way to stop the march of history is to build a roadblock so steep that no gay or lesbian couple could possibly surmount it.
Philly Catholics Go To D.C. To March Against Gay Marriage
Members of the Philadelphia Archdiocese loaded up five buses this morning, heading to the U.S. Supreme Court to protest gay marriage—the topic of case hearings today and tomorrow. CBS Philly talked to some of the marchers, who were lovely, open-minded people.
One of those on the bus out of Center City was Paul Sank from Maple Shade, New Jersey, who says regarding gay rights, he feels a small minority is pressing its agenda on the rest of the nation.
“Homosexuals – lesbians and gays, the LG part – make up maybe two maybe, three percent of the population and they have a
Chris Christie Can’t Figure Out Where He Stands on Gay “Conversion Therapy”
Yesterday, Chris Christie was asked (where else?) in a town hall meeting during a news conference about a bill moving through the New Jersey State Senate to ban gay "conversion therapy," a practice you may have first learned about on South Park. His response was a little underwhelming, if you oppose pointless and cruel efforts to change someone's sexual orientation.
"You know, I'm of two minds on this stuff in general," Christie said Wednesday. "One, I think there should be lots of deference given to parents on raising their children. . . . I'm generally a skeptic on those things. Now there
Hillary Clinton Announces Support For Gay Marriage
Honestly, we thought this had already happened:
Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced her support for gay marriage Monday, putting her in line with other potential Democratic presidential candidates on a social issue that is rapidly gaining public approval.
Clinton made the announcement in an online video released Monday morning by the gay rights advocacy group Human Rights Campaign. She says in the six-minute video that gays and lesbians are "full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship."
"That includes marriage," she says, adding that she backs gay marriage both "personally and as a matter of policy and law."
