City Council Uses Veto Override to Flex Muscles at Mayor Nutter
City Council voted on Thursday to override Mayor Nutter's veto of a bill that would allow for an expansion of Finnigan's Wake in NoLibs. The bill will let owner and Democratic committeeman Mike Driscoll to add balconies that hang over the sidewalk on Spring Garden Street. Councilman Mark Squilla, the bill's sponsor, says that the decision to override was based on the principle that the isn't one that Mayor Nutter should decide.
This is more or less procedural. It has nothing to do with the subject matter." The day Council received notice of Nutter's veto Squilla said, “As a
The Piazza at Schmidt’s Is What’s Wrong With Philadelphia
Los Angeles is an unreal city. Unreal as in “not real,” as opposed to “cool” or “rad” or “bitchin.” It’s a desert mirage, a metropolis built where no metropolis ought to live, and as such contains all the improbability of its geography: a sprawling, gridlocked playground of the absurdly rich and impossibly desperate, drenched in the near-constant haze of smog and sun. Los Angeleans are easy to spot because they carry with them—depending on their income bracket—either the trauma of riding a bicycle through six lanes of dense traffic, or the rarefied, otherworldly and profoundly unsettling glow of having lived their life among the stars.
Lots of White People Have Moved to Northern Liberties
A recent analysis from Michael J. Petrilli of the Fordham Institute takes a look at the fastest-gentrifying neighborhoods in America based on the increase in the share of the population made up of white people within a zip code. The only Philadelphia neighborhood that cracked the list of 25 was the Northern Liberties/Fishtown area, which saw the share of the population comprised of white people jump from 24.7 to 45.6 between 2000 and 2010. A lot of that "gentrification" can probably be attributed to Bart Blatstein's grand experiment known as the Piazza at Schmidt's. Though, we doubt many of the

Pat Burrell Grabbing a Woman’s Breast at the Piazza on Sunday
Pat Burrell returned to Philly over the weekend so that he could retire with his former club. Fortunately, it also meant that we were all treated to a weekend's worth of out-on-the-town antics like dancing shirtless at the Pen and Pencil, spending $158 at a bar and not tipping, and grabbing a young woman's breast at the Piazza in Northern Liberties. Crossing Broad is slowly but surely piecing together the former Phil's weekend agenda. [Crossing Broad]
