“Rocky” Musical Officially Coming to Broadway

Let another round of "Yo!" jokes commence. Rocky das Musikal, apparently a smash-hit in Hamburg, is officially slated for the U.S.A., and we're not talking some off-Broad Street theater, either. The stage adaptation is slated to hit Broadway's Winter Garden Theater in February 2014 (that venue has housed Mamma Mia since 2001; I guess it's time for another 70s-era nostalgia-trip).

Before the news was official, the New York Post reported that the play could cost as much as $30 million to put on, making it one of the most expensive ever. One of the show's producers disputed that figure, saying it

Food Cart Vendor Fatally Stabbed in South Philly

A 69-year-old man was loading his food cart with supplies at 4:30 a.m. when he was fatally stabbed in the neck. The suspect is thought to have fled the scene afterwards, in what is being called a robbery attempt. The alleged murder took place on the 400 block of Volmer Street, down by Oregon Ave.

Firefighters Establish Memorial Fund For Fallen Captain

Via Councilman Jim Kenney's Facebook page, please note that Firefighters Local 22 has established a "memorial fund" to help the family of Capt. Michael Goodwin, who died earlier this month fighting the "fabric row" fire in Queen Village.

“We vowed to Mike’s family, as we have to all families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty, that we will always stand by them and take care of them. This is the first formal step in that ongoing process,” said Fire Fighters Local 22 President Bill Gault. “Firefighters are family and that bond is unbreakable. We’re grateful for

A Really Lucky Guy Had His Life Saved By A Belt Buckle

A new reason to not let your pants sag down below your bum--besides it not being the 1990s anymore. 4 p.m. yesterday in Gray's Ferry, one man shot another man, who's in critical condition. A stray bullet also entered a nearby store, where it lodged itself inside a man's belt buckle.

He was getting ready to take a hand truck outside when a shootout broke out in the street. "I went outside and heard the shots and I hit the floor," said Reynoso. Moments later a pound cake falls by his head that was hit by another bullet...Shortly thereafter, someone pointed

Food & Wine: East Passyunk Ave One “Ten Best Foodie Streets in America”

But we knew that already. Now the tourists can too. East Passyunk Ave gets the Food & Wine magazine treatment, landing on its list of "Ten Best Foodie Streets in America." Making the cut: French joint Fond, Marra's pizza, Will BYOB, Liquor distillery Pollyodd, and vintage kitchenware boutique Era Atomica. Stateside, apparently being punished for the departure of its lauded chef, did not make the cut. [Food & Wine]

Even in Jail, Vince Fumo Can’t Escape the IRS

You know Tax Day is coming up when the IRS is knocking on your jail cell, asking for $2.9 million. But such is life for ex-State Sen. Vince Fumo, serving 61 months in Kentucky for fraud. Ralph Cipriano reports:

On March 21, Fumo got a visit in prison from an IRS agent bearing a notice from Guadalupe N. Ortiz, acting area director of the agency's Philadelphia office. The IRS was formally notifying Fumo that he was being hit with an extremely rare "notice of jeopardy assessment and levy," which, including tax, interest and penalties, amounts to a bill for a total of

South Philly Coffee Shop Ranked #1 in the Country

Ultimo Coffee, in Point Preeze/Newbold, has been named the country's best coffee shop by The Daily Meal, a website that is exactly what you think it is. Despite the coffee shop's precious hipness (my words, not theirs), "what you won’t find at Ultimo is an attitude." Not coincidentally, Ultimo won Philly Mag's 2012 "Best of Philly" coffee shop too. And the reason this magazine was most excited about the place (they've got beer) was not lost on TDM: "Bonus points for the craft beer store the Newbold location shares its space with—caffeine to start the day, beer to end it." So either

“It’s Always Sunny” to Air on a Channel You’ve Never Heard of

Eager to titillate its younger audience a little more than usual, FX has decided to create a spin-off channel called "FXX." (Dangerously close to FXXX, the casual googling of which may get you arrested in some midwestern states.) And on that channel, designed specifically for 18-34 year olds, you will find the 9th season of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," come fall 2013. The new network will beam into 70 million homes on September 2nd. "The League" and "Totally Biased with W. Kamu Bell" will also move to FXX. Oh my God, is that really the name?

Police Release Video Of Convenience Store Robbery

Philly Police describe the scene above:

On March 21, 2013, at 10:44am, an unknown male entered the Good & Plenty mini Market located at 1201 Snyder Avenue and approached the counter. The suspect then walked behind the counter where an employee was standing and began robbing the store. During the robbery a struggle began between the employee and the suspect who then punches and cuts the employee's neck with a knife and takes items from the employee's pockets.
