Steve Martin Played Him Some Banjo in Philly Last Night

WXPN's 13th annual Non-COMMvention music festival kicked off last night with a performance from Steve Martin and Edie Brickell (Paul Simon's wife), who played songs from their new folk/Americana album "Love Has Come for You." It's easy to forget, but one of Martin's original shticks was getting up on stage with a banjo, mugging, and occasionally making some music. Here's audio of the performance, in which the tunes are interspersed with a few discursive semi-jokes.

If you want to see the banjo, but not hear it so much, see the vintage display below.

Penn Wants to Ban Smoking on Campus

Penn's University Council Committee has recommended banning smoking. Like, not only in every building, where it's is already prohibited, but in every nook and cranny within the boundaries of campus. Penn would be the first Ivy League school to impose such a policy. FYI, there's a second-hand smoke Truther spreading the gospel in the comments section underneath the original DP report. Don’t Look Now, But Drexel Women’s Hoops Playing for NIT Championship

While consumed with Kevin Ware's horrific injury and Mike Rice's abusive behavior, I suspect many of us missed the local NCAA angle: Drexel women's basketball is on the verge on winning the NIT championship. (The NIT is the tourney for teams that barely missed the NCAA tournament cut-off.) Last night at the DAC, the Dragons dispatched with the University of Florida, and on Saturday will face the winner of the other Final Four semifinal, between Utah and Kansas State. Those schools are bigger and richer than Drexel. But they don't breathe fire. Or have goofy billboards up on I-95. [Inquirer]

Drexel Law Offering Students 2-Year, Vacationless Degrees

No, this isn't some University of Phoenix type pseudodegree. Drexel University's Earle Macke School of Law is giving students the option to graduate in two years, rather than three. Given rising levels of student debt and law school tuition, this seems like a no-brainer, right? Well, there's a catch: It won't actually cost you less. Instead, you're paying the same price, but forgoing your summer vacation. Sure, you save an extra year of housing costs and get to the job market faster, but the degree may not be all it seems at first glance. [Inquirer]

Penn Sues Wharton…for Not Being Wharton

Last month we featured the Perelman vs. Perlman saga. This month, it's Wharton vs. Wharton. UPenn is suing a California business education something or other called the Wharton Business Foundation, which appears to be trying to capitalize on the business school's name to appear a little less shady.

You can see where Penn is coming from here:

Wharton Business Foundation operates a website with the Wharton name and offers services including business education and business consultation through its Wharton Business Foundation University, according to the complaint. The company also advertises and maintains a toll-free phone number (888) 4- WHARTON, the university said

Drexel Entrepreneurship School to Teach Entrepreneurs How to be Entrepreneurial

Using $12.5 million in donations from the Charles and Barbara Close Foundation (Charles is class of '36), Drexel is founding a School of Entrepreneurship. Called, you guessed it, the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship. It'll be the first one of its kind in Philadelphia. Though it's sort of unclear what will actually be learned there. Take the planned "Entrepreneurship Living-Learning Community," "where like-minded students will live in a residential environment dedicated to entrepreneurship programming." Also: "the School will also serve the regional entrepreneurial and business community through its thought leadership in entrepreneurship research." Sounds interesting! [Technically Philly]

Penn Students Sue University for Gross Housing Conditions

Here's a familiar college tale: Students move off-campus, get rats and mold, want money back, can't locate absentee landlord. That's what happened to six UPenn students, except the landlord was basically the university. And they're suing.

[The plaintiffs allege] that their house was afflicted with various problems including leaks, rodents, mold and the collapse of their third floor bathroom ceiling...Their lawsuit is for $39,645 in damages against the defendant — $35,240 because of rent paid during “poor living conditions” and $4,405 due to an unreturned security deposit.

Among the icky details: In the spring of 2012, a light fixture in the living

Life Is Tough for Philadelphia’s Republicans

It wasn't much of a surprise to most people when news networks all over the country projected that President Barack Obama had won Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes in the 2012 election. Pennsylvania has gone blue in each of the past six presidential elections and that's thanks, in large part, to voters in Philadelphia. The thing is, though, that not every voter in Philadelphia punches the Democratic ticket. In a post published on Esquire's political blog, City Paper's Isaiah Thompson writes about what Election Day was like for one Philadelphia Republican.

Billy Joel Has Time to Read Philebrity, Answer Every Insult

Billy Joel has sold more than 150 million albums. He's won six Grammys. And he was once married to one of the world's most beautiful women. So what does a 63-year-old super-rich musician with a background in substance abuse and depression do on your average Tuesday night? He sits around reading nasty things that bloggers are saying about him.

On Tuesday, Philebrity published a story about the University City District's Heart & Soul project, an awesome-sounding piano pop-up in which the public will be invited to play on a series of artist-decorated pianos throughout West Philly. Philebrity's headline? "For University City's

Jay-Z and Kanye Brought Watch the Throne to Philly

Plus: Flyers beat Buffalo

H.O.V.A. and Kanye Played a Sold-Out Wells Fargo Center. Last night Jay-Z and Kanye West brought their Watch the Throne tour to Philadelphia and played 36 songs in front of a sold-out crowd at the Well. A number of Eagles, including LeSean McCoy, Asante Samuel and Todd Herremans, and (former?) Phillie Jimmy Rollins were there to take in the show. Herremans even tweeted about Kanye's "leather skirt" (it was a tunic). [Inquirer]
