The guy pictured here is Casey Moore, the official, fully authorized, 100% deputized Weekender intern. Casey is an affable fellow who likes beer. A lot. He plans to be out every single night for Philly Beer Week (which, in case you’ve forgotten, begins this Friday), and I asked him to lay down his thoughts on the subject. If you see him out there, buy the guy a beer, because even prestigious publications such as the Weekender do not pay their interns. Here’s how Casey thinks you should spend your time during Beer Week:
Friday, June 4th: Pre-game Belgian drinking at Devil’s Den 2nd Annual Maudite Midnight Madness party, beginning at 12 a.m., making this the first official PBW event. Then, go back to Devil’s Den at 7:30 p.m. when the guys over at Bella Vista beverage will be on hand with rare brews from Voodoo, Cigar City, and Ballast Point. Or, throw one back with Mayor Nutter at the Opening Tap party at Independence Visitors Center.
Saturday, June 5th: The International Beer Expo comes to the Navy Yard. $45 (in advance) gets you access to 100 beers from over 50 international breweries. Also, Varga Bar closes down 10th and Spruce for a big old beer-filled block party. Beers will be greasing up the stomachs of the meek, forcing them to sign up for the hot dog and wing eating contests. And don’t miss the search for the next Varga calendar girls.
Sunday, June 6th: McGillin Olde Ale House’s Creative Black Tie Beef and Beer 150th Anniversary Celebration. Exactly what it sounds like.
Monday, June 7th: City Tap House is hosting Bell’s Brewing and a whopping 31 of their beers on draft. They’re saying it’s some kind of world’s record. I say drink up.
Tuesday, June 8th: Beer and German food go together like, well, beer and happiness. Get happy at Brauhaus Schmitz’s Ayinger Beer Dinner. Ayinger brewmaster Franz Inselkamer will be on hand.
Wednesday, June 9th: Get on the Craft Beer Express, the perfect solution to the problem of needing a designated driver when no one wants to be one. The bus has a bunch of stops including P.O.P.E., Devil’s Den, Bishop’s Collar, Kite and Key.
Thursday, June 10th: Local pilsners go head-to-head in competition at Triumph Old City’s Klash of the Kaisers. Lots of crowd participation, i.e. you are expected to drink a lot. And at Standard Tap, folks will be consuming all-local brews and then, if they’ve consumed enough, participating in the Gong Show. The talents will be amazing and the feats daunting, I am sure.
Friday, June 11th: The crew from Founders Brewery heads to South Philadelphia Tap Room for a beer dinner paired with never-before-tasted-by-you Founders brews. At Monk’s, meet and have lunch with three of the top brewers in Belgium.
Saturday, June 12th: Devil’s Alley hosts Battle of the Brewers 2010 and the Magic Hat Burlesque Bar Crawl sure does sound like fun. But if you’re in the learnin’ mood, don’t miss the 20th Annual Michael Jackson Tutored Tastings with Randy Mosher.
Sunday, June 13th: Beer and running? Dock Street says yes with their 3rd Annual Amazing Philly Beer Race. Penn Museum welcomes the 2nd Annual Zynthos America Belgian fest. This is Belgium’s premiere beer festival, but in America. It is also, sadly, the grand finale to Philly Beer Week.
