If there’s anything that Weekender intern Casey Moore loves almost as much as beer, it’s World Cup soccer. The games kick off this Friday in South Africa and run through July 11th. Casey suggested that the Weekender sponsor a trip for him to Cape Town, but, unfortunately, he forgot to fill out Form DR-942 in triplicate. So he’ll be staying in Philadelphia, and I asked him to roundup some of the best local places to watch the games.

Here’s what he has to say:

Philly Cigar Club at McFadden’s: If you’re looking to enjoy a smoke and a scotch during this Saturday’s USA vs. England match up, head to the McFadden’s patio at Citizens Bank from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It’s $45 and includes the game, semi-open bar, a cigar, and lots of food. 11th and Pattison, 215-952-0300.

Fado: This is actually an “Official U.S. Soccer Bar” (whatever that means) and will be the headquarters for U.S. games for many fans. Watch on an 18-foot screen at this Saturday’s block party. Fado is changing their hours and opening early each game morning. $14.95 for a traditional Irish breakfast served with a pint. 1500 Locust Street, 215-893-9700.

Brauhaus Schmitz: This is the one and only place you should be watching if you are rooting for Schweinsteiger’s camp. The popular German restaurant is adding four TVs to their setup and there’s a beer-a-day-for-a-year raffle. 718 South Street, 267-909-8814.

Gojjo: Since it’s the first time that the World Cup has ever been hosted on the African continent, this West Philly Ethiopian restaurant will be an exciting place to watch the African teams play. Gojjo will open each match day at 10 a.m. The food and Ethiopian brews are worth trying. 4540 Baltimore Avenue, 215-386-1444.

The Whip: In case you’re stuck way out – and I do mean way out – in the burbs, this is your best bet. The traditional British pub (and a Best of Philly winner) in Chester County horse country is already a popular spot to watch soccer, so I can only imagine what World Cup fever is going to bring. 1381 North Chatham Road, West Marlborough, 610-383-0600.

Fuji Mountain: Want to watch the Samurai Blue go head-to-head with Cameroon? Do so here with a nice piece of otoro, some maki, and a bottle of sake. They’re showing the Japan games upstairs. 2030 Chestnut Street, 215-751-0939.

Picanha: Brazil has won more World Cups than any other country, and they are looking really good this year, so this Brazilian barbecue joint on Castor will be going nuts and flying the green-and-yellow all month. You might bring a Portuguese translation guide, because Picanha is old school. This ain’t Fogo de Chao. 6501 Castor Avenue, 215-743-4647.

Miga: Korea has always been that underdog waiting to shine, and this year, they could be the first Asian squad to lift the gold to the sky. Watch the Korea games at Miga with some bi bim bap and soju. 225 South 15th Street, 215-732-1616.

The Piazza: Where else can you enjoy a P.Y.T. burger, a pint from Swift Half, the Saturday farmers’ market, the fresh air, and the Cup matches on a giant outdoor screen?

UPDATE: To this list, we’d like to add the London Grill. During most of the games, they’re offering $3 Carlsbergs and $6 South African wines. And the Saturday morning hard-boiled-egg-and-ham-pie breakfast sounds just right.

SoccerBars.com has the bars and pubs. The Soccer Near Me iPhone app, mentioned also has these locations and you can also see where the other fans are gathering for the viewing parties.
