THIS WEEKEND: THREE ART SHOWS YOU SHOULDN’T MISS

From nude Beatles (sort of) to Darth Vader

If roaming about air conditioned art galleries (with wine and cheese, we hope!) sounds like a lot more fun than dealing with the Garden State Parkway, here are three local about-to-open art exhibits worth a peek.

The Return of Vader. Or at least his head. The Vader Project touches down in Philly on July 5th (hopefully you have off on Monday) with 100 versions of Darth Vader’s iconic helmet, all re-imagined by a different artist. Check out these cool Pop renditions by the likes of Ron English and Marc Ecko at Freeman’s Auctioneers and Appraisers. If you want a little of the Sith Lord on your mantle go back on July 10th (with about $4,000 in your pocket) when the helmets get auctioned off. July 5th-9th. Freeman’s Auctioneers and Appraisers, 1808 Chestnut Street. freemansauction.com. 215-563-9275.

Butch it up. Butch Cordora, host of the recently canceled local gay-centric talk show In Bed with Butch is back with an exhibition (opening today) made up of large scale prints and canvases in which Butch pushes masculinity’s boundaries with depictions of straight and gay men in the nude together. Is there a naked Abbey Road send up? Of course there is. July 2nd- August 1st. Ven and Vaida, 18 S. 3rd Street. venandvaida.com. 215-592-4099

Grad Students are artists too. But if those are a little too offbeat for your taste, try the Clay Studio’s Seventh Annual Graduate Student Exhibition which opens today, featuring 28 ceramics grad students from all across the country. These aren’t your younger siblings’ Play-Doh creations. July 2nd- August 1st. The Clay Studio, 139 N. 2nd Street. theclaystudio.org. 215-925-3453.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND

Victor's Top Picks: Hang out with Philly's best photographer under 95 or dance with gypsies at the Factory

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on 4/30/2010 at 11:45AM | No Comments

For the whole 42-item rundown, check out Wednesday’s edition of The Weekender. Here are my top picks:

1. Join the 64,999 other people heading to the Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival on Walnut Street this Saturday starting at noon. There’s great food, live music, plenty of shopping and the chance to check out the tan-seeking coeds in the park. Plus, you can win a dinner for two at a Stephen Starr restaurant. For each canned good/non-perishable you drop off at any of Starr’s Rittenhouse-area restaurants or the Philabundance truck, you get a chance to win. The drawing will be at 5 p.m. in the Starr cooking demo tent.

2. Go buy some photos by our favorite Philly photographer, Zoe Strauss. Every year, Ms. Strauss sets up a guerrilla-style art installation under I-95 at Front and Mifflin in South Philly and sells copies of the images for just $5. Be there this Sunday afternoon after you’ve watched the 30,000 huffers and puffers at the Broad Street Run.

3. If you’re not running down Broad Street but still want to work off some calories while having too much fun, my suggestion would be the gypsy punk dance party otherwise known as the Gogol Bordello performance at the Electric Factory. If you need a refresher, here they are sickening up “La Isla Bonita” with Madonna at Live Earth. You’ll also recognize the lead singer, Eugene Hutz, as the guy that made Everything Is Illuminated memorable, playing opposite Elijah Wood. $27.50 for one of the best live shows you’ve seen in a while. And hey, if that’s too high strung for you, there’s always Johnny Mathis at the Kimmel. Ugh.

4. Previews just started for 1812 Theatre’s An Evening With(out) Woody Allen at the Plays & Players on Delancey. It’s a night of readings and interpretations of the comic master’s essays and articles from his early (read: non-sucky) days, and in the hands of Philly’s funniest theater group, it should be a blast. The previews are $20, and the price goes up once the show officially opens next week.
